Bible Guy & A Few Other Crazy Stories

As a college student from Lancaster Bible College, my summer job was lifeguarding on the beach in Wildwood, NJ. If you spend any extended time with me the chances are good that you will hear a story from those days on the Wildwood Beach Patrol.

I love to talk about feeding the seagulls forty ice cream sandwiches, my friend who got bit by a shark, the guy who broke his neck by diving into the sandbar, or the drunk guy that we found face down on our beach and we flipped over with a boat oar. And then there is the lifeguard that worked the beach next to me who killed a seagull because it ate his sandwich and years later found out that he killed a man then buried him under the boardwalk. Crazy times, but I am so thankful for those summers. It was quite a balance from Christian college student to roommates in a lifeguard house with parties that rivaled any fraternity. God allowed me to use everything that I was learning about His love for the people in the world as I literally lived "in the world." I wasn't perfect by any means but I did try to live the "set apart life."
For all my efforts I was ridiculed and made fun of, with other guards calling me "Bible Boy." At first I was annoyed at this because even at roll call the lieutenant would call me out as Bible Boy. After awhile, I embraced it as a badge of honor. Although the guys didn't like that I wouldn't get drunk, curse, or sleep around like they did, they did respect me and often came to me with life problems and spiritual questions. I honestly had really good friends from those Wildwood days and one of them is the beach patrol captain today.
What are you known for? Is it your work, church, family, faith, or a combination of a lot of things? Some titles we might be offended by and some we can embrace. God uses every season of our lives, good and bad, to help us grow more in the grace and likeness of Jesus.

Thanks so much for giving to our campus ministries in Greater Philadelphia. Please continue to partner with us, and invite others to partner. Consider having me come share what God is doing and how God is moving on the college campuses in Greater Philadelphia.
Please keep our college students in your prayers. Over Spring Break, we are taking 14 college students to go serve in North Carolina by helping with Disaster Relief and Rebuild projects. We will be traveling over nine hours in a fifteen passenger van. We appreciate prayers for safety on the road and while we are working, and also please pray for the families and lives we are able to impact through service.
