The Greatest Gift

What is the greatest gift you have ever received? I will never forget the year my parents switched from giving me gifts like toys and trucks to socks and shirts.

For a pre-teen, all I wanted to do was play with a racecar or something on Christmas morning but one year, my parents gave me a sleeping bag. How disappointing; how do you play with a sleeping bag? Little did I know that that gift would turn out to be one the best gifts ever. I used that for sleepovers, camping, summer camp, retreats and I even took it to college. Sometimes, what we most need in life is not the flashiest or latest toy but just something practical that will last a lifetime.

The prophet Isaiah wrote these words seven hundred years before Christ:

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given;

and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

It is interesting that Isaiah speaks to the future from the past tense. The gift of Jesus had been planned from the beginning of time. God knew that the only answer to the world's greatest problem, sin, was Himself. Jesus did not have a flashy entrance like you imagine but a humble beginning in an obscure town called Bethlehem. But the gift would go on to live a perfect life and then die on a cross for our sins. Have you given your life to Jesus? Do you know Him as your Lord and Savior?

I am not sure if you are a regifter or not. I often feel bad regifting but with the white elephant gift exchange, it is inevitable. This year I got women's hot chocolate socks and gummy worms: they are going right back in the bag for the next gift exchange. When it comes to our faith, God calls us to be a regifter. In Matthew, Jesus tells us to go into all the world and preach the Gospel. We have a great opportunity to share the good news of Jesus with everyone around us. He is truly the greatest gift you can ever receive.

Thanks so much for giving to our campus ministries in Greater Philadelphia. We are so grateful for the opportunity to share the Gospel at Delaware Valley University, Gwynedd Mercy University, Montgomery County Community, and Chestnut Hill Colleges.

Ways to Connect and Support

  • This is a way you can keep up to date with college events and pray for them, as they happen.

  • This will give you access to the blog and picture archives.

  • Giving and seeing the great things God is doing on the college campus is a blessing.

  • If you are a current partner, thanks so much!

  • If you are not, please pray about supporting us monthly (anywhere from $25-$100 a month).

  • Invite your small group or Sunday school class at church to adopt a campus ministry (Delaware Valley University, Gwynedd Mercy University, Chestnut Hill College, or Montgomery County Community College). We can set up a time to prayer walk a campus, meet students, host a dinner, or support an upcoming outreach event.  Just let us know where you want to direct your focus.
