It's all about the Net

I had a former pastor say all the time, “it's all about the net.” He wasn’t talking about the internet or a basketball net but about relationships in ministry. This past semester we have had a blast in our virtual bible study at Montgomery County Community College. We have been studying the life and ministry of Jesus from scripture and the mini-series The Chosen. You might have heard of it: it is amazing. The Chosen provides so much insight and inspiration.
One of the episode clips that touched me the most was from Luke Chapter 5. This is where Jesus comes across the disciples washing and mending their nets. Remember, they had fished all night and caught nothing. We have all been there, where nothing seems to go your way. The disciples had to be tired, frustrated, and ready to go home. But Jesus was asking them to trust Him. Peter says, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything, but, because you say so, I will let down the nets.” When they followed in obedience, they caught such a large number that their boat began to sink.
After this event, the disciples' lives would never be the same. It was in this moment that they saw Jesus' power and authority over all things. Jesus quickly transitioned them from casting nets for people instead of fish. This net involves mending, through care and prayer. This net requires washing through worship and repentance. This net is strengthened through God’s truth and godly friendships. Once healthy, this group of mended, cared for, Jesus loving, bible studying, prayerful friends can reach the people around them. Then after salvation they become the next mesh square in the net that will go reach others.
God is asking us daily, "Do you trust me" by asking you to put out in the deep water and let down your net. On the college campus we cast the net in deep waters. At your work place you and your other Christian friends are the net. In your neighborhood you and your Christ following neighbors are the net. This morning in my devotions one of the quotes I wrote down was “God’s revelation is God’s invitation.” So the moment we “know” is the moment we are called. Jesus is calling us to throw down our nets. Let's continue to do so together!
As always, I am so grateful for your prayers and support!
