Supporting from the Sidelines

Being a campus missionary, I have the privilege of standing on the sidelines of students lives. Sometimes it is standing next to a student struggling with doubt or grieving the loss of a loved one. Sometimes it is standing with a student who just made it into the honor society. This past week I have had all three of those happen.

We stand and support those that God puts in our way. I stood next to a new student this week as she poured out her heart of fear and anxiety, coupled with finding her place in the world and she kept asking what do you think Jesus thinks about this. We don’t know exactly what is going to happen but we stand in prayer and encouragement.

I stand on the sidelines literally of students that don’t yet know Jesus personally and cheer them on as they play men’s lacrosse or women’s softball. Jesus did this in pre-conversion discipleship. He walked with the disciples before they were disciples. We walk with students praying and asking for the Holy Spirit to do His work but also speaking words of Biblical truth into their lives. I am reminded of Paul saying to the Philippians, “Therefore, my beloved brethren whom I long to see, my joy and crown, in this way stand firm in the Lord, my beloved.” He calls them his joy and crown…

Who is God calling you to stand on the sidelines for, to cheer them on? Co-workers, family members, hurting people, lost people, all people that Jesus loves. I consider you, and thank God for you, as you stand with us in prayer and support for students in local universities.

Please pray for our sports ministry at Chestnut Hill College. Many of the players are seeking God for the first time. Pray for Coach Mike (red jacket) as he finds that balance of faith, family, and lacrosse. He encourages me and allows me in the huddle, the team room, and on the sidelines.
